My Pet Teratoma's fifth album launched
My Pet Teratoma’s 5th album 'Shattered Echoes' has now been released across platforms. Alongside MPT's traditional blend of alt-rock, this album contains more folk, classical and electronic influences to reflect some of the more emotive lyrical content. "Its been a hard album... a lot of the songs have fallen in the wake of some pretty big life events including the death of loved ones. So the tracks draw on a lot of recent reflection on life; seeking to embrace the good things while shedding some of the bad things I have been carrying." "One big thing i realised is that i have very few memories of my life. I was always asking friends what we were up to and always really surprised as i had no recall. I finally dug into that to seek explanation. Through a deep process lasting over a year i was able to regain some, sadly not particularly good, but it has enabled me to detoxify and that has been liberating!" "The title 'Shattered Echoes' is how i would best describes my memory so, i guess, my life to date!" The main musical inspirations for the album were Blood Red Shoes, Deftones, The Carpenters (as always!) and Depeche Mode. My Pet Teratoma or [mpt] was started as a short-term solo project of Co Down-based songwriter Richard B back in 2014. Originally from Wales, Richard moved to Northern Ireland in 2011 and reignited his love of songwriting. "I was very inspired by the vibrant music scene in Belfast and was blown away a gig at the Oh Yeah centre when the Wonder Villains supported Ash. It really reawakened the drive in me. Prior to that I hadn't written anything in about 10 years". My Pet Teratoma was formed in 2014 with a hasty addition of bass, drums and keyboard to the self-taught guitar repertoire. "I value the DIY punk ethic; it keeps things honest." All of [mpt]'s music is self-produced, warts and all. My Pet Teratoma's music has been likened to The Smashing Pumpkins, Weezer, Ash, Blink 182, Neil Young, Coldplay, Green Day, Muse, Ween, Imagine Dragons, REM, Radiohead, The Killers, Interpol, Silversun Pickups, The Smiths, The Cure, John Mayer, The Doors, My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth, Marilyn Manson and the Nine Inch Nails. Contact:
mypetteratoma@gmail.com The project name comes from a B-movie idea. Teratomas are predominantly benign tumours near the reproductive organs in which cells start growing body bits in a sack, with teeth and hair and other things - its pretty gross. The B-movie potential of these things becoming sentient and terrorising a community was so disturbing that turning one into a pet just seemed to soften it a bit. That's the truth although it could work on a more profound level about the relationship we have with the things we dislike about ourselves. The acronym MPT also appealed as a 'play' on empty. Deep brah!
